In e-publishing is it ever a good idea to sell a novel in parts? My idea is to sell Part One cheap, say 50 cents or less, then sell the other two or three parts for one or two bucks each, so that the whole novel ends up being close to the going rate. I wonder if this would encourage folks to take a chance on reading an upstart author they've never heard of. Any thoughts?

WestPlainsStan, this is a great question.

I've had an author recommend something similar. He recommends selling each chapter individually. I haven't checked into the logistics yet as I'm not to that point. But I've had followings at fanstory.com when I've posted novels chapter by chapter.

You CAN do it, wintr.  One of the things writing is so good at is translating human universals across cultures. That makes us all one people, right?  It's hard to make the Iranian or Spanish or Inuit culture translate to others who are not of that culture, but it's so worth pursuing!

Stan, not a bad idea! Go see my link in another post about Darcy Chan who sold her whole novel for .99 when she couldn't find an agent and became a huge success! She does have an agent now.

i've noticed 'oomph' can lurk and be found in mysterious ways...when i actually run out of expressions to write to show what the character felt i google faces...i do the same to define features and guess how OOMPHY it gets if my character is a hunk to drool for! Tongue

btw...my name is Humeira. everyone calls me Humi and i'm an old LR lover. did my BIP here and now this novel course. LR rocks and i'm so glad to have found u guys.

Good idea, googling faces!  I haven't tried that.  The internet is so full of great resources!

also...and this was seriously a gem of a find! my kids love this XM radio station KIDS PLACE LIVE. they play awesome songs and have awesome hosts so the kids have great entertainment. as for me...i get a bagful of ideas every single time i listen to it. the kid music scenario is so fresh and innovative, it should be a crime to not be inspired.

Great idea, winterpk. Will have to check out that station. I already turn to images whenever I'm trying to describe anything from art to reality. It's a really great resource.

Also, I received this in my email a few minutes ago:

Children's eBook sales up 475.1% comparing January 2011 ($3.9 million) January 2012 ($22.6 million)
Hardcover increased 68.9%, Paperback 61.9%, Other $ 38.9% and Board Books decreased 11.5%

Interesting figures. This is from Publisher Weekly's Children's Publication, so I don't have other genre comparisons.
