I'm not that far, but most likely I'll write about the growing number of released animals in the Redlands. May 2010 our shelter put out a video of the animals they euthanized. 250+ a day-old, young, puppies, kittens, etc due to the overwhelming amount of animals they took in a day. They told the public this problem was ours as much as it was theirs. Then last summer the shelter closed for several months. They had to euthanize every animal because they had an outbreak of distemper. There was no where for people to take their unwanted pets. The rescues and smaller shelters were full too. So the Redlands have become a dumping grounds.

Hope you're getting along well with your article on health insurance. Our family doesn't have any, so the doctors and hospitals work within my payment arrangements. Fortunately they haven't been too exorbitant.

The Australian Govt has come down tough on not having private health insurance. If you haven't got it you you pay top dollar and if you can't afford it unless it's an emergency you have to wait and this could be years.

Nanlisa,

How are you doing?

I'm going to rethink my planned story. The local newspaper wrote an article that was pretty thorough a couple of weeks ago. So, I'm rethinking my assignment choice. If I don't come up with a non-fiction idea, I have a fiction back-up. I'm presently on Assignment 4. I feel like I'm writing a term paper, only this time I'm really enjoying what I learning and writing. Guess I had to grow up to appreciate what my teachers were trying to teach me.

ann,

I'm so glad my doctors work with me. Not that we have expensive health needs. Mostly regular check-ups, but we do occasionally pick up something I can't cure at home with natural remedies. As far as what an emergency is, well I guess  you have to be dying or something. I went to the emergency room when my back went out. I was in so much pain, I couldn't move or think straight. They made me stay in the lobby for six hours and then informed me, since I didn't have insurance, they weren't going to do anything for me. They scripted out some pain meds and sent me home. I refused to leave until they did something about the pain so I could walk out. They gave me an injection that was supposed to work within twenty minutes. It finally kicked in well enough after an hour and a half. Cost me $ 2,000. I paid them small payments until the bills were paid. If we had insurance for the family it would cost almost $1,000 a month and the deductible is $ 2,500 per person. I have never come close to those costs since the birth of our children. I recently took the twins for their yearly. They were due for some vaccinations. The total cost was a little over $ 400. I opted to get them the cancer vaccine since cervical cancer runs in our family. Still no where near the cost of insurance and deductibles. Well worth not paying right now. We are considering catastrophic insurance as that would wipe us out. I'm hoping our government can't force us to purchase something we don't need. We're a healthy family.

I hear what you're saying. It is a debatable issue. The arguement is about the healthy family not needing it...then oneday their world turns upside down. That's why it called insurance. It's not cheap here and there is a lot medicare doesn't cover.
Up to the individual and what they can afford isn't it?

Spellbound: I'm hanging in there, but I'm still laid off. I'm thinking about changing my topic. I know health insurance is important, but perhaps I should simply write a personal essay about me finding a job with my previous skills and experience; especially in a job market that is simply flooded with health care jobs.

Nanlisa,

I think that'll be interesting. Especially from the point of view of one who is going through the trials in a field, they claim, especially down here, is wide open. Schools all over the place pumping out people ready to work, but can't find a job due to the competition.

Heard from a health care professional that our hospital boasts it has never laid anyone off. Well, they have, just found a loophole. They eliminate your job and let you know you can apply for another one, but neglect to tell you the other available jobs have tons of applicants. You end up walking away, but they didn't lay you off. You left.

Spellbound. I might just stick with my original plan, and that why having health insurance is important. Come to think of it, I'm going to write about having supplemental health insurance. A lot of people don't know about this. I've been looking for a hospital indemnity plan since last summer. I researched the various insurance companies, and now, I have a general ideal of what I'm going to write about.
