I finished Ass. 2 for the novel course.  Question I have for you experienced folks: Is it better to have all your characters fleshed out before starting on Ass. 3?  Or do they grow as you go...?   I am so a beginner at this! Thanks for any all help!

I took that some years ago, but my characters definitely grew!  I just completed my novel this past October and my characters are totally different than how they started out. Hope that helps.

Marcy there is no right answer. It honestly depends on what you prefer. When I first started writing I tried to know everything about my characters, but now I learn as I write.

I usually do have my characters fleshed out to some degree before I start writing.  Sometimes it’s just getting the basic personality down.  For instance, I knew the mc for my recent novel would be strong, feisty and short-tempered (though I didn’t realize just how headstrong she would turn out to be!) and that the mc for my current novel would be sweet and gentle, with the gift of touching others emotionally and drawing out the best in them.  It was just as much fun creating the men in their lives.  My feisty mc got paired with a cool, calm and very collected man who was even more stubborn than she, while my lovely sweet gal is thrust into the life—and arms—of a hot-tempered, hot-blooded male.  Such fun!

So yes, I do know my characters (sometimes quite well, sometimes not very well) and they always grow as the story progresses.  And sometimes they give me headaches… Cheesy

Thanks, guys.  Your comments were very helpful.  My gut sense was to let them grow as I go and maybe add a few as I go along.  Have been away from the site for a while.  Visitors, petsitting, etc.--all the usual excuses.  Trying to catch up now.
