Long time no visit but I've been really, really busy...

Yes, the more downloads Speck gets, the more his story climbs the Free Lists, hopefully hitting a Bestseller list. The higher you climb the free lists when it switches back to paid, you'll sit higher than before the promo on the paid lists (not the same level as the free lists as Amazon's algorithms count so many free downloads to one paid download). If you hit a certain number of free downloads (unknown what the # is) you'll also be in the Customers Who Bought This Also Bought on other book pages widening your book's presence on Amazon. The free promos are all about creating a bigger presence for your book on Amazon.

How does that work? I published my short story collection and another longer story on Create Space just for practice, I don't care if they sell or not, but I cannot set the price at $0, Create Space won't let me. Do I have to go into Amazon to do it? They are both available on Amazon.

My publisher (White Bird Publications) published it through the Kindle Direct Publishing department.  They allow you to set the price you want..

And Angela is right about the download numbers moving you up and down in the rankings.  I'm not sure how impressive/important it is...but I can now say I'm a Kindle best selling author...I made it up to # 7 in Westerns in the US and #4 in the UK.

And honestly...while it's set for the most part in the "old west" it's a bit fantasy (time travel by magic) romance and maybe even some suspense. :-)
