I haven't written a word in months, since I graduated BIP. Re-written--yes. But new stuff--no.  What's wrong with me? Anybody have the same lull?

I don't think you're alone. I know I go through phases. I'll want to draw for a while, and then I'll cringe at it for months. I'll write ferociously for a week, and then let it lay there. Back and forth, back and forth.

I've only done a little bit of "New" work myself.  Not exactly a great list of work either.

A fantasy story that needs drastic reconstructive surgery along with a bit of DNA replacing.  (Currently in a coma.)
Another fantasy that, while I suppose I technically started, is little more than basic idea and world elements.
A.... I'm not sure what to call it, that's high on idea and missing all but the bare scraps of practical application.

The rest?  Rewriting, editing, head-desking.

So yeah, I'm with you.  If I ever learn the discipline of writing, that'll change.

Oh my.  I said if. Lips sealed

You are not alone. Staying connected here might give you the urge more than if you never came at all

No, I'm pretty sure the rest of us spend every waking minute writing, mbj. For God sakes what's wrong with you??? KIDDING, I'm KIDDING.  I just went through a BIG lull myself, but recently started my 2nd novel. It happens. Sometimes an idea will attack you when you least expect it! Definitely stay connected here! Smiley

You mean not everyone spends every waking minute writing??  I’m feeling very alone right now… Cheesy

I also had a big lull, when I had my youngest three children—in three years.  Not much time for writing then!  I’ve also had times when my writing has been off and on, but I’ve made it the habit now to write every day.  Someone recently told me that forming new habits is more effective than trying to be disciplined.  Still processing that statement, but it sort of makes sense.

So, nuthin’ wrong with you!  Either you write or you don’t.  You get better at writing or you don’t get better at writing.  (Wow, so cheery first thing in the morning.  I’m not always like this.)

If you need inspiration you can always pop in here, as Ann and Liz suggested.  We’ll be more than happy to help.  Like I’ll tell you to plant yourself at your desk with a cup of coffee and write the best romance of all time… Cheesy

I totally understand where you are coming from. With no more assignments.. now one has to query successfully to get assignments. And the no's get discouraging. It's even more discouraging where there is no hurdle that, once, climbed, one is home free.

My querying has slacked off and I write only now and then. I haven't sold anything since last October!

Fortunately, Mary gives us those prompts. There is one pending now about being poolside.  What's the max word count Mary and does there need to be dialogue?  So far I have just a nice peaceful poolside scene. I bet many of you will have a whole story set there, complete with screaming kids, romance and intrigue, all in a few hundred words.  I know nothing about kids, have already proven I can't write anything even remotely romance related, and am not even sure what intrigue is.

Rewriting is writing.  Besides, my writing has never been at a publishable level, but my rewriting has been many times over.

Right now I'm wondering why I don't have the urge to write. I was really sick on Saturday and stayed home and rewrote a piece. Since then, I can't even look at it to polish it, nor can I pick up anything else that needs writing, including my assignment due Aug. 7th. Tried to force myself on the polish and ended up ruining it. Good thing I keep each rewrite. I'm thinking if I can't get the desire to move on, I may have to ask for an extension.

Where's the fire? Can't even find an ember to blow on.

You are definitely not alone, MBJ. For me it was mentor-withdrawal symptom (MWS) when my BIP course ended. But I nudged myself over that one.

The thing is, the longer it continues, the harder it is, I suspect, to re-establish your writing routine. I started by re-working things I had done for the course.

Then I used some tools from WD. Then a few minor acceptances gave me a boost.

I severely regulated my schedule. (Omitting all things non-essential to furthering the writing.) In truth I only survived this for 3 weeks (when the laundry pile had become too high.) But it was enough. It worked.

This last, the schedule thing, was the most useful, for by then I was on a regular writing schedule. Whew! It took a while. (And I know it's not the only hurdle I'm going to jump, being rather new at this craft.)

Keept trying different methods. (Reading Pressfield was very helpful to me. Especially when the old Beast of Resistance attacks.)

The good thing about fiction is there is always an idea around the corner! Along with my novel I'm working on a story for Wild Rose Press. I forgot about them.... Just hang in there, and as someone said, rewriting is writing!  Smiley

All this shows is that none of us obviously have to put food on the table, pay our bills etc by earning an income from writing. You couldn't afford the lull moments or you would starve or have the power cut off.

Thanks. You guys rule. And Lizbeth you're funny--I think we could hang out. Unless you're one of those Yankees.

Seriously, I want to write a story or play or something more, about adults with mental and physical handicaps who live in group homes and attend school or work in supervised jobs. My  "vision" is an ironic comedy.

I used to drive for a school like this and I met some amazing people. I still transport some of these people on my city route.

My problem is--How do I write about these fantastic, warm, generous, and funny people without making fun of them?

These people changed my life and made me a better person. I want to immortalize them, but I'm very afraid of hurting or offending them or others like them.

I know the answer is inside me, but I have yet to find the way. Help?

I look after people with mental and physical handicaps. I know what you mean and I'm sure there is a way to say it...perhaps it's what you get out of it. If you write it right you won't offend you will be showing how you have gained from the experience.
