I've been looking at some writers conferences, workshops, retreats and wondered if anyone has attended one? Was it a positive experience? This site is a great place for contact with other writers, but I would love to meet and talk to some in person (old fashioned, I know). I'm considering South Carolina Writers Workshop (http://www.myscww.org/) in Oct. Has anyone heard of it?

I love writer's conferences.  In fact, I've been to three this year so far and plan to attend two more.  Not only have I met some great writers but I've also learned a lot just from listening to their discussions.

The thing to remember is to decide beforehand what you want to get from the conference.  Do you want to meet other writers, get a critique, attend workshops or meet with an agent or editor?

My suggestion would be to find a conference that has several different things going on so you can try a little of it all:-)

Thanks, Speck. The one I'm looking at has all of the above. I'm excited about trying it.

Very cool!  I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Take notes and write up a review of the conference.  Mary posts them in the newsletter and that's a writing clip.

Definitely go, PKC!  Do your homework first and decide which panels sound good for you and which authors you want to meet.  Then you can plan your schedule ahead and not run around madly, missing things you wish you'd attended.  And do write up a review for me!  That's a clip you know. It's published!

How about the Muse Online Conference? It's great and a lot of fun. I did it last year and it may not be the same as a live Con but I sure learned a lot. I have a link to it on my Web blog.  Just copy and past this link into your browser.

I attended the RWA National Conference in San Fran this summer and it was a total blast. I learned so much and met so many nice people. I have already marked my calendar for the next one in D.C. next summer. I know they also have a regional one held in the one of the southern states. If you write romances I would check them out.

Cool, Angelia!  The RWA conferences are great.  You know, I'd love a review for the Long Ridge Newsletter.  That's a published clip if I accept it.  :-)  You can email it to me from the many links in the Newsletter or at:  MaryRosenblum@forums.longridgewritersgroup.com

Thanks in advance!

I have never been to a writers' conference before. I'd like to go to one one day, but right now, I just don't have the money. I've been out of work since February, I'm on Social Security Disability, and I really can't do anything until I can get me another part-time job.

I had considered going to the Hawaii Writers Conference, but they're not having it this year due to lack of funds. I'll get to one one day. I just have to save up the money first.

Hi everyone,
I volunteered at the Surrey International Writers Conference (BC Canada) last year - a wonderful way to "attend" a conference when you are broke or struggling with the budget.  Having the opportunity to hang out with writers of all sorts, talking with interesting writers like Anne Perry and Diane Gabaldon as well as many others... Incredible.
Afterwards, I was very motivated - joined a writers group in my area, started reading on the craft of writing (got lots of great tips at the conference), and am writing more regularly, trying to be thinking like a writer as I go through the day.
I'd strongly suggest that if you have the opportunity to volunteer at any writers conference, do so - there are more ways to learn about writing than you think!
Cheers - Celia

Ditto what Celia says!  And welcome, Celia, by the way.  Sounds as if you're doing all the right things.  Cheesy  I've been guest at many many conferences and not only do the volunteers have access to the programming guests, but we all appreciate volunteers a LOT!  (Well, almost all of us --ignore the occasional jerk, every profession has a few).   And you often get the chance to spend time with someone you admire or want to learn from.  It can be very good pay for a few hours work.

What goes on at these writers' conferences? I've never been to one before. Now that I found a part-time job and have gone back to work, I'd like to save up to go to one.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
