Very interesting thread! I like learning what everyone does. I'm a preschool director during the day, was a stay-at-home mom before that and I used to be a Kindergarten teacher before that! My husband and I also run an alternative ed high school program for at-risk teens and so I work two nights a week and he works two nights a week.

ITS Hell Desk I work at a university and fix computer problems over the phones. If it requires a hands on kick in the slats, I schedule someone to go over and scare their computer into obedience. (How's that for an ego trip?) I also write the occasional technical documentation for the processes we handle and try to make them coherent to non-techs.

Sweetheart if you can make those tech support docs coherent to non-techs, you're doing a LOT better than most tech writers! Mary Rosenblum LR Web Editor

The secret is PICTURES! ... Lots of pictures with circles and numbers so they can see what you're talking about. The pictures take care of those who are visual learners. The ordered lists take care of the logical progressionists.

Yeah but pictures cost money and many companies opt for the text and few pictures....and then if the text is really awful... I was reading the text 'how to' for a helicopter simulator software for a friend the other day. He couldn't figure out how to install it. I could see why! I think English was the author's third language never mind second!

I was a department manager and now I am a Inventory Control Specialist for a Supercenter Wal-mart. It sucks to be in retail but I know I'm designed for better...ha! It is great for people watching and creating characters that someday will come to life on the written page. Maybe.

I work in the local library system as a library assistant (in essence a librarian without the library degree -- my degree is in history).
Dale
Dale.. how does on get a library job with out having a library degree? My degree is in the sciences. The library jobs all seem to go to librarians. David

I worked for Child Protective Services. Background is Special Education and Social Work. Am now retired; do house sitting and pet sitting for some extra money. Finally taking the time to learn more about writing and to write.

Good question, David. I used to work for the Indianapolis-Marion Country Public Library in Human Resources. All our librarians had to have a masters in library sciences. You just need the "library" part since you have the sciences. LOL!

If i had to do it over, I'd probably get the MLS (master of library science) degree. Librarians all work in nice quiet places, relaxing places even if they often have irregular hours.
the library science degree is nothing like the biological science degree that I have.

My new job has kept me busy (along with my girls and family) so I haven't been on in a while ... I'm an assistant innkeeper at a bed & breakfast in the finger lakes region of NY (heart of wine country). Friends (and also neighbors) own a b&b and decided to purchase another one so they asked me to run it. I LOVE IT! The guests have been wonderful and the stories I have collected. Oodles!
