Excellent overview and comparison of the three leading e-Readers. Gives a good idea of the relative merits of each.

Thanks, Dale, that was exactly what I was looking for. Those were my top five questions, so Nook it is. Which is pretty well what Dani suggested I buy a year ago. Only now it's $150.00, much more affordable.  Cheers, Amanda

I was pretty much decided on the Nook though still haven't made the plunge. I then got the research bug and wanted to buy a particular authors book. It's available on the Kindle, but not the Nook. Then looked up another book that was available on both, the book was several dollars cheaper on the Kindle. Argh. Back to indecisive mode.

Well, THANKS Angelia. Now I'm back at square one as well. Never occured to me I might be able to get books on one but not the other. Plus, I still don't think the Nook is available in Canada. I'm going to England in six weeks, wonder if I can get one while I'm there ... hmmm...my turn to research.

Amanda- England, how nice!! I went when I was 3 with my mother; needless to say, I don't remember any of it!  I know I had some really nice kilts though that I do still remember!!   Have a wonderful time and please send us a postcard! Where are you going in England?

Stoke-on-Trent, lizbeth, other wise knows as the potteries and the midlands. I've lost count how many times I've crossed the pond but I love it every time I go. I miss Canada when I'm in England, miss England when I'm in Canada.

Mother does have a computer so I will try to stay in touch. And yes, Mary, I will use the opportunity to write about everything I see and do.

Not really fussy on flying, though. Or airports. Hope I don't giggle through the strip search...

Amanda - Sorry to burst your bubble.  Grin I was feeling the same as you and was very irritated when I saw that the book I wanted wasn't offered in Nook, but in Kindle. Have fun in England.

And now for more news, Kindle 3 is out and is now the cheapest between the Nook and the Kindle.

You use lose the 3G cellular wireless but many folks have access to Wi-Fi networks.  Me, I like having 3G access on mine--an extra fifty dollars is reasonable, but your mileage may vary, as they say ;-)

As to availablilty on Kindle but not on Nook: I'm willing to bet that any books on Kindle will, in time, be available on the Nook as well.

If you are still having problems deciding between the two, go by a Barnes & Noble store, they all have Nook displays so you can hold it, try it out, etc...  Personally, I love my Kindle.  Its the best purchase I've made in decades, but I doubt the Nook would be an inferior product.  I'd say try it, if you like it, buy it.  If you don't, buy a Kindle.

As to 3G vs. WiFi: I agree with Dale - the convenience of the always on connection is worth the extra $50.

I would love to try out a Nook but I have no idea where the closest B&N would be. I tried 'Locate a Store' (they only ask for zip codes, not postal codes so I don't think they have any in Canada), I put in a Michigan zip code and a message came up telling me there isn't a store within 100 miles of me. Very irritating. No better off with Amazon.

Yep, the cheaper version of the Nook and Kindle only have wifi. So, you have to decide if you need 3G as well.

Could always grab an Ipad. It has it's own book app called Ibooks. Then you can use Kindle, Nook, and a PDF reader on it as well.  Borders has it's own e-reader app.

By using the Ipad as an e-reader, you aren't limited to shopping from just one location. So you can comparison shop, and find the best deals.

I have a wifi only Ipad. I like it. I never found myself to far away from a wifi hotspot to connect to the internet and shop for books.

True, but the iPad does cost somewhere between $400 and $500, so there is a much larger initial investment.
