Hi Mary -- I have a friend who just received her Novel course book--it includes the following wording, which was also in my coursework which I completed almost 2 years ago.  I am supposedly on a "list" but have given up, and now work with a LR instructor outside the realm of LR.  Since, according to LR, this option is not yet available, shouldn't this wording be removed until this is available?

Continuing On: A Bonus Option
Although you're required to complete only the flrst three chapters of your
novel for this course, you can continue to work with an instructor (for an additional
fee) as you write the remainder of your book. You'll receive information
on this option as you near the end of the course  Of course,  you may decideto
continue to work on your novel on your own. It's entirely up to you.

Well, Lizbeth, printing is very expensive and LR is not printing material as needed.  They probably  contracted for  a huge print run of that material. It will be a very expensive loss if they chuck 'em all and reprint 'em.  They DO intend to offer this and if students inquire they're told just that...the project is not in place yet.  What is the harm?  As you found out, if you want to continue the course you can do so privately.

Thank you, Mary, but I still say the harm is that it is  very misleading since you do not receive information on this option as you near the end of your course!   And I am not continuing the LR course privately, I am working with a mentor who happens to also work for LR.  But if she didn't work for LR, I would still be working with her. My $$ goes to her, not LR.   One last thing and then I'll let the subject drop, it may be expensive to reprint, but it would be the right thing to do, and  that's what business accoutants are for.  Ok I am done...  Smiley

I looked over my forms, and while it does seem a tad misleading that there is an option in place, I personally don't have a problem with it mentioning that option.  No business is perfect, and the huge costs to reprint these forms and chunk the already paid for forms is very high in comparision to the relatively few authors that would even be interested in that option would be very high.  Besides, what if they finally did get that option working after eliminating it from their brochure?

Personally, I have no plans to pay for anymore "guidance."  After taking the novel course, I hope the guidance I get to start the novel will be enough for me to finish it as well.  I'm well-versed enough in my nonfiction work after taking the BIP course that I feel confident in what I send in.  I'm not saying it woudln't be useful, but I expect I'll have learned enough by the end to at least finish my novel.

The course is really designed, Brandon, for just what you describe....to give students a solid foundation in what makes a good novel, structure-wise, to fine tune craft weaknesses  so that a student is writing at a publishable level, and to educate that student about the real world of marketing.  This is what stops an awful lot of aspiring novelists!  :-) It really is not designed to continue beyond Assignment Eight and to be honest, very few of my students have wanted or needed to continue.
